Original title: Wanda
A Polish emigrant single-parent family is established in Chicago during the economic crisis before the Second World War. Two children, Wanda and Olek, who are brother and sister, have to face the problems that come across their needs of adapting to a new country, to a new culture and to new habits. They try to redefine a safe feeling of “home”, but they have to deal with the attitude that others have towards them. Wanda trusts her mother’s last words: “Draw, Wanda and the entire world will fit into your closet” - until the day when, tired and frightened by her colleagues mean jokes and aggressive acts, with her single dress shredded by them, she asks her father to listen to her and return to their home country.
“Wanda” is a performance about discrimination, harassment, the poverty stigma and xenophobia, all seen through the eyes of a group of middle school children.
Far from blaming, rather drawing a fine line of responsibility, the performance launches a speech about the way the young people lose their light and their compassion, following the grown-ups example, while the grown-ups aren’t even aware of it.
