This performance is a “Sugeki-nized” stage adaptation of “Narayamabushi-ko” (“The Ballad of Narayama”), and received the Palme d’ Or Award at Cannes International Film Festival in 1983, directed by Shohei Imamura.
Theater Company 1980 was founded in 1980 by the acting course alumni of Imamura’s Film school, Yokohama Broadcasting Technical School (Currently: Japan Institute of Moving Images). Under the tutelage of Imamura, the company inherited endless energy for creation and spirit of human inquiry. Also, Theater Company 1980 is the only company that was created by Imamura’s apprentices.
“Sugeki” was introduced by Yukio Sekiya; as an ultimate theatrical method that eliminates realistic stage sets, costumes, and makeup - scenes are created by several black boxes and white ropes, with the physical expressions of the actors, playing multiple roles. Simple but deep, “Sugeki” creates audiences’ internal drama by stimulating their imagination.
In March 2016, Theater Company 1980 performed this “Sugeki Narayamabushi-ko” in Tokyo. Simple and vivid scenes made audiences identify with their own lives synchronized with the characters of the story. The story contains deep questions about the meaning of human life and death.
